Apple working on a new processor dedicated for AI-(artificial intelligence) related tasks
Apple's virtual assistant that powers its iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS devices, could get a huge boost in the near future. That's because it seems that the company is working on a dedicated chipset for handling AI-related tasks. As reported by Bloomberg website, the AI chip is internally known as 'Apple Neural Engine' and will improve how Siri handles facial and speech recognition tasks.
The inclusion of a new chipset for AI enhancement would also take the load off the A-series primary chipsets and motion co-processors. This in turn may lead to improvements in battery performance. A person familiar with Apple's plans told Bloomberg that the company could let the new chip handle facial recognition in photos, some parts of speech recognition, and iOS' predictive keyboard. Apple may even give developers access to the chip in future, letting third-party apps offload certain tasks from the main processor to the ' Apple Neural Engine'
The report further adds that since artificial intelligence is present across different products and platforms, Apple could bring a dedicated chip for all of them (including iPhones and iPads). 'Apple Neural Engine' will compete against its counterparts from rival companies such as Google's Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) or Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 835 SoC, which also has a dedicated module for handling AI-based tasks.
